In a tragic incident that unfolded at approximately 9 pm on Sunday, within the confines of Ikponwosa/Egban community, Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, a police inspector identified as Jonathan Okouromi allegedly took the life of Sergeant Abosele Akhere, both members of the Edo State Police Command.
The unfortunate event transpired amidst an operation carried out by operatives from the Edo State Police Anti- Kidnapping Squad and the Control Intelligence Rapid Response Squad. The joint operation aimed to apprehend individuals suspected of engaging in cult- related activities, a persistent threat that had plagued the Ikponwosa/Egban community.
Sergeant Abosele Akhere, displaying unwavering dedication to his duty, successfully arrested a notorious cultist known as ‘ Raggae, ‘ considered a prime suspect in the region’ s recent wave of cult- related disturbances.
However, the turn of events took a devastating twist when Inspector Jonathan Okouromi reportedly, and without apparent cause, discharged his firearm, fatally shooting Sergeant Akhere from behind. The sudden and unexplained act shocked those present during the operation.
A credible but unnamed informant has disclosed alarming events, recounting, ” Without warning, Inspector Jonathan Okouromi unexpectedly raised his firearm, discharged a round, and struck Akhere in the back. The motive behind this action remains unknown; he fired without apparent cause. Akhere promptly collapsed, blood streaming from the wound. ” The severity of the incident unfolded as Sergeant Akhere was promptly transported to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
