Exam Manipulation Rocks Nigerian Nursing Council As Absentee Student Is Listed As ‘Passed’
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has been accused of bias in the conduct of its computer-based examinations held in Delta State.
According to multiple sources who spoke with SaharaReporters, despite not writing the examination due to reported health-related issues, a non-participant was listed as having passed.
Sources told SaharaReporters that the student in question was not at the examination venue, as she was said to be receiving medical treatment.
However, she surprisingly emerged as number one on the results list.
Findings show that the student whose result is being disputed is “Achusim Stephanie”.
“Information has it that a candidate who didn’t write the exam in College of Nursing Agbor as she was undergoing treatment for health related issue (health issue name withheld) ended up passing the exam,” a source told SaharaReporters.
“Of all of those that wrote the examination, only six passed while 58 failed. How come she was one of the people that passed when even those that wrote failed.”
Different sources and concerned stakeholders are calling on the authorities of the Nursing Council of Nigeria to investigate how the affected student, who is currently said to be seriously sick, managed to pass the examination despite her absence and non-participation.
“Students who partook in the examination are agitated but at the same time scared to speak up. It is unfair that someone who was not even a part of the examination writing would pass and even be number one on the list, meanwhile those who wrote end up failing, does it mean they did not write the exam?” a source who does not want to be named told SaharaReporters.
Another source who asked not to be named told SaharaReporters that;
“A candidate who did not sit for the exam was recorded as Passed.The student in question was absent on the exam day.”
“Her attendance was not recorded.She did not enter the hall or write any of the 3 papers.Yet, when the result came out, her name appeared among those who passed. Many students who consistently excel in school exams unexpectedly failed the NMCN exam.”
“Several top-performing students also failed the same paper. This pattern appears inconsistent with our academic performance and raises concern about the accuracy of the results.”
“We believe that if someone who didn’t sit for the exam can be marked as passed, then there may be errors or irregularities affecting the rest of the results as well.”
The affected students asked for; “re-verification of attendance records and an investigation into how a non-participant could have a “Pass” outcome.”
Attempts to reach the Provost of the College of Nursing, Agbor, Rita Ogonne proved abortive as of the time of filing this report.
The Colleges of Nursing in Nigeria continue to face recurring issues of poor transparency and accountability.
In September, SaharaReporters reported that the Kwara State College of Nursing Sciences and Midwifery, Oke-Ode, in Ifelodun Local Government Area, was enmeshed in a growing storm of corruption, manipulation, and brazen impunity, with staff members and students accusing the Provost, Mr. Abdulquadri Olanrewaju, of running the institution like his personal business empire.
Insiders had told SaharaReporters that the Provost and some staff members had turned examinations and admissions into a racket for money and political influence.
“Some of the staff members, including the school provost, are manipulating results for students. These students are very confident that even if they had an issue with their colleagues, they will threaten them that they will not pass,” a staff member who spoke on condition of anonymity said.
Another source described the atmosphere of fear on campus, saying, “People always panic because of this. They are now scared of this set of students because they have an affiliation with the provost.”
SaharaReporters also learnt that it is not just internal examinations that are being manipulated. The provost is accused of tampering with entrance examinations and admissions into the school.
