Government Shuts Down All Boarding Schools Over Rising Terrorist Abductions

The decision followed the outcome of a meeting between the governor and security chiefs in the state, reviewing security incidents in schools in some parts of the country.

The Yobe State government, under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni, on Saturday directed the closure of all boarding Secondary Schools in the state as a “proactive measure” to safeguard students in the schools.

The decision followed the outcome of a meeting between the governor and security chiefs in the state, reviewing security incidents in schools in some parts of the country.

This was contained in a press statement signed by the Director General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Mohammed Mamman, a copy of which was made available in Damaturu.

“A notice signed by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Bukar Aji Bukar, directed immediate closure of all secondary schools pending improvement in the situation.

“Governor Buni called on the people of the state to pray for the leadership, security operatives, peace and improved security in the country”. Mamman stated.

In Kebbi State, 25 girls were kidnapped from a boarding school in Maga, and a vice-principal was killed.

Meanwhile, in Niger State, at least 303 children and 12 teachers were abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri in a mass kidnapping.
