Political Tension As Speaker Suspends Four Lawmakers Over Alleged Impeachment Plot
Crisis is brewing in the Benue State House of Assembly as four lawmakers have been suspended for allegedly plotting to remove the Speaker, Aondona Dajoh, from office.
The affected members are Alfred Berger, representing Makurdi North; Terna Shimawua of Kian; Cyril Ekong of Obi; and James Umoru of Apa constituency. The suspension, which will last for six months, was announced during plenary on Friday.
The dramatic move followed a motion of urgent public importance raised by the Majority Leader of the House, Saater Tiseer. According to him, the suspended lawmakers were attempting to destabilise the assembly by plotting an impeachment against the Speaker. He described their actions as a “needless crisis” that could threaten the stability of the legislature.
After the motion was adopted, Speaker Dajoh ordered the sergeant-at-arms to escort the suspended lawmakers out of the chamber. The Speaker also announced changes in the leadership structure of the House. Berger, one of the suspended members, lost his position as the spokesperson of the assembly, with Audu Elias immediately appointed as his replacement.
This suspension adds another twist to the rising tension within the Benue State Assembly. Earlier in the week, Alfred Berger had publicly denied reports that the House had passed a controversial bill seeking to ban love and romance in the state. He described the viral claim as “fake news,” insisting that no such bill was under consideration. His denial came after the story sparked outrage and ridicule on social media.
