Tiwa Savage Hails Ex-Husband for Career Rebrand
Afrobeats queen, Tiwa Savage had revealed how her ex-husband, Tee Billz helped to rebrand her career. She reflects on effect of image as a musician.
Tiwa was recently a guest on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast with Joey Akan. She revealed that she was once a tomboy when she started her music career in Los Angeles.
Her image was however reshaped and rebranded by her then manager and ex-husband, Tee Billz.
According to the mother of one, she was only interested in masculine outfits – baggy jeans and t-shirts. This is entirely different from Tiwa’ fashion sense today.
She stated that when she returned to Nigeria to start her solo career, Tee Billz encouraged to change her fashion sense.
Tee Billz rebrand of Tiwa’ career was timely. This is because major Nigerian labels like Mo’Hits, EME, and Storm Records rejected her at the time.
Her words,
“He told me I needed to lose weight, go to the gym, wax my eyebrows, wear wigs,” she said. “He rebranded me. I was a tomboy, and he saw something different for me…They said marriage made me irrelevant,” she recalled. “But that bold rebrand forced people to pay attention.”
