According to Emmanuel, the Southeast governors are not following the example of other regions that have worked collectively to free their activists and freedom fighters. He questioned why the leaders of the Southeast have chosen to remain silent, leaving their ” own son” in prolonged detention. Nnamdi Kanu has been held in detention despite various calls for his release.
In the statement, Emmanuel particularly addressed the chairman of the Southeast Governors Forum, Governor Hope Uzodinma, urging him to take a leadership role in working for Kanu’ s release. He expressed disappointment that Governor Uzodinma, as a political leader of the region, has not made any significant move to secure the release of his ” brother. ”
The statement reads in part: ” South East Governors, why are you stopping the freedom of your own son? To what benefit is it to keep your son perpetually incarcerated? Why can’ t the SE Governors take a cue from other zones who collectively worked for the freedom of their freedom fighters? ”
Emmanuel also accused Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja of being a major obstacle to Kanu’ s release. He claimed that both Justice Nyako and Morgaji Bichi, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), had taken a rigid stance that undermined Nigeria’ s image in the eyes of the international community.
” Those opposed to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’ s release are inadvertently suggesting to the international community that this administration is ineffective, ” Emmanuel added, pointing out that the refusal to release Kanu is creating an embarrassing situation for the current government.
The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, despite court orders and calls from various groups, remains a contentious issue in Nigeria’ s political landscape, especially in the Southeast region where Kanu has significant support. His family and supporters are now calling on the Southeast governors to show leadership and act in Kanu’ s favor.
Nnamdi Kanu was re- arrested by Nigerian authorities in June 2021, after fleeing the country in 2017 while on bail. Since then, he has been held on charges related to his pro- Biafra activities, with legal battles ongoing over his release.
