The Nigeria Labour Congress, or NLC, is worried that the benefits of the newly proposed N70, 000 national minimum wage which has not yet been put into effect have been undermined by the present price of Premium Motor Spirit, or gasoline.
In his remarks, NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized the pressing need for the government to address how rising fuel prices are affecting the lives of workers during a two- day workshop in Lagos. President Bola Tinubu was accused by Ajaero of deceiving organized labor into accepting the minimum wage on the pretense of stabilizing gas costs.
He emphasized the grave circumstances that a great number of Nigerians are living in and advised the government to address the pervasive poverty, hunger, and dissatisfaction before things get worse.
We were betrayed by Mr. President, Ajaero said, reflecting on earlier conversations with Tinubu. He reiterated that the administration had refuted their accusations of betrayal.
He recalled how the president had forced them to choose between a minimum pay of N250, 000 and rising gas prices, forcing a one- week adjournment for additional talks.
” In fact, that N250, 000 may not even be enough to buy fuel, ” he said, arguing that even a N250, 000 pay would not be enough if fuel costs continued to climb. The union head emphasized that the government had to prioritize stopping smuggling at the borders rather than funding a trip to West African nations to look into their fuel prices.
He said, ” Mr President equally offered to fund our trip to tour some West African countries, where the least price of petrol is selling at N1, 700. He even said in Cameroon, they are selling N2000 and that none of them has a refinery but they are getting their products from Nigeria.
The president of the NLC also mentioned that the union will be meeting with the federal government on Thursday to discuss ways for workers to weather the recent increase in gas prices at the pump.
