In a recent news conference held in Abuja, the Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has urged President Bola Tinubu’ s administration to declare a state of emergency on unemployment in Nigeria. The executive director, Ibrahim Zikirullahi, emphasized the pressing need for decisive action to address the rising youth unemployment and crime rates in the country.
CHRICED proposes a strategic approach by urging the government to allocate N1 billion for job creation in each of the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across the nation.
Zikirullahi highlighted the importance of tailoring these investments to the unique characteristics of each LGA, focusing on key sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, industry, and information and communication technology (ICT). This, he argued, would lay the foundation for inclusive economic growth in Nigeria.
The call comes amidst the ongoing challenges posed by the cost of living, which CHRICED views as a significant existential threat to millions of Nigerians. While acknowledging some recent government interventions, such as increased wages, conditional cash transfers, student loans, and efforts to revitalize manufacturing and agriculture, Zikirullahi cautioned that these measures may fall short without a robust emphasis on sustainability, transparency, and accountability.
