In the Abaji Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), gunmen posing as herders assaulted the Yaba village market, leaving at least one vigilante dead and six others with varied degrees of injuries.
The event occurred on Saturday following a fight between some vigilantes and herders at the community market, according to Daily Trust.
The altercation was purportedly caused by vigilantes seizing the motorcycles of some herders who had arrived at the market.
There was a fight after the herders allegedly organized against the vigilantes.
The newspaper cited a source as stating, It seems like the Fulani have been angry with the way the vigilantes have been harassing and impounding their motorcycles, especially on Yaba market days, which made them mobilize to engage the vigilantes.
He claimed that one vigilante died and six others were cut with machetes during the altercation.
He added that two more vigilantes with serious injuries were referred to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada. He said the six injured vigilantes were later brought to the nearby Abaji General Hospital and Ayaura Health Centre.
On 15/12/2023 DPO Yaba Division received a distress call that some members of the vigilante group and Fulanis clashed at Yaba market, stated SP Adeh Josephine, a spokeswoman for the FCT Police Command, who confirmed the event.
