Osun NLC Directs Local Govt Workers To Withdraw Services Amid Electoral Crisis
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Christopher A. Arapasopo, the NLC cited safety concerns as the primary reason for this directive, emphasising that the volatile situation poses a significant risk to workers.
The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed local government workers to refrain from reporting to their offices due to the ongoing political crisis surrounding the conduct of local government elections in the state.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Christopher A. Arapasopo, the NLC cited safety concerns as the primary reason for this directive, emphasising that the volatile situation poses a significant risk to workers.
“The Osun State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) strongly affirms its earlier directive, instructing all Local Government Area workers in the state to withdraw their services in light of the ongoing political upheaval within their workplaces. We urge our members to continue praying for peace and stability in the state,” it said.
The statement further stressed that ensuring the safety of workers remains a top priority for the NLC.
“This release serves as a reminder that the safety of our members at work is paramount. We will not allow our members to operate in an atmosphere of insecurity,” it said.
Reaffirming its commitment to workers’ rights, the Osun NLC declared that it would not be intimidated by any political pressure.
“We remain resolute in our commitment to defending the rights and interests of workers and the general public. We shall not be cowed or intimidated by desperate attempts to silence us. We stand firm in our resolve to uphold justice, fairness, and the rule of law in our beloved state,” it said.
The directive comes amid a heated controversy over the conduct of local government elections in Osun State. The crisis was triggered when the Federal Government, through the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), advised the state government to halt the elections.
Fagbemi cited a ruling by the Akure Court of Appeal, which reportedly had implications for the electoral process. However, the Osun State government defied the directive, insisting on proceeding with the elections as scheduled.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) subsequently withdrew from the election, after initially taking control of several local government secretariats across the state. Following the APC’s withdrawal, the Osun State High Court in Ilesa issued an order allowing the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission to proceed with the elections.
This ruling was in response to a lawsuit filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which remained in the race. On February 22, 2025, the elections were held despite the controversies and legal disputes.
The following day, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission declared the PDP victorious in all 30 local government areas of the state.
Announcing the results at a press conference, OSSIEC Chairman Hashim Abioye stated that the election had recorded a 60% voter turnout, a claim that has been contested by opposition groups.
On Sunday, Governor Ademola Adeleke swore in the winners of the local government and councillorship elections.
