Nigeria’ s former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has paid tribute to one of his close friend, late Namibian leader, Sam Nujoma, describing him as a quintessential patriot and courageous leader who dedicated his life to his country’ s freedom and development.
In a heartfelt condolence message addressed to Namibia’ s President Nangolo Mbumba and the bereaved family, Obasanjo extolled Nujoma’ s unwavering commitment to national liberation and African unity. His message was conveyed through a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi.
Nujoma, who passed away at the age of 95, was Namibia’ s first President, serving from 1990 to 2005. His leadership was instrumental in the country’ s transition from colonial rule under South Africa to an independent nation. Obasanjo highlighted that Nujoma’ s journey was one of courage, resilience, and visionary leadership.
” As the world mourns President Nujoma, our prayer is that his passing reminds us of the sacrifices he and his contemporaries made for Africa’ s independence, ” Obasanjo stated. He further emphasized that Nujoma’ s contributions extended beyond Namibia, as he also played a pivotal role in fostering peace in Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Obasanjo drew parallels between their struggles, recalling how Nigeria actively supported Namibia’ s fight against apartheid and colonial domination. As Nigeria’ s Military Head of State in the late 1970s, Obasanjo ensured that Nigeria stood firmly with Nujoma and the South West Africa People’ s Organisation (SWAPO) in their quest for independence.
