MTN Nigeria has begun implementing a 50% tariff increase, following the approval by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in January. The price hike primarily affects data plans, while call and SMS rates remain unchanged for now.
A senior MTN executive, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the development, stating that the implementation is being done gradually across various products. ” Yes, we’ ve started updating our price lists. However, this process is gradual, and we haven’ t completed it for all products yet, ” the source said.
The revised data plans show a significant increase in costs. For instance, the 1. 5GB monthly plan, previously priced at ₦1, 000, has been replaced by a 1. 8GB plan now costing ₦1, 500. The 15GB plan has increased from ₦4, 500 to ₦6, 500, while the 20GB plan now costs ₦7, 500, up from ₦5, 500.
Larger data bundles have seen even steeper hikes. The 1. 5 terabyte 90- day plan has surged from ₦150, 000 to ₦240, 000, while the 600GB 90- day plan now costs ₦120, 000, up from ₦75, 000.
The NCC announced the tariff adjustment on January 20, citing rising operational costs and the need to sustain the telecommunications industry. Reuben Muoka, the Commission’ s Director of Public Affairs, stated that the decision aligns with NCC’ s regulatory mandate under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
However, the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has strongly opposed the increase and is threatening legal action. The group is advocating for a reduction in the hike, proposing that it should be limited to 10% instead of the approved 50%.
Despite the backlash, MTN and the NCC insist that the price adjustment is necessary to ensure the long- term sustainability of the telecom sector in Nigeria. Whether the protests from subscribers will lead to a policy reversal remains to be seen.
