Family & Friends Shed Hot Tears As University Student Dies Weeks After Paying School Fees; See What Killed Him
A tragic incident occurred at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology on Saturday when newly admitted student Emmanuel Nweke accidentally fell from a two- storey building located in the Ikorodu area of the state.
The incident occurred around 4: 00 pm on the balcony of Emmanuel Nweke’ s apartment, located at Lasunwon First Gate, a neighborhood largely inhabited by students.
Devastated colleagues revealed that Emmanuel Nweke, a 100- level mathematics student, had ventured onto the first- floor balcony corridor to get some fresh air due to a lengthy power outage, moments before the tragic incident occurred.
As Nweke reached the corridor, he leaned against the balcony railing, but unfortunately lost his balance and tumbled from the dilapidated building, striking his head on the ground upon impact.
Community sources disclosed that Emmanuel Nweke, who was from Anambra State, succumbed to his injuries before his colleagues could rush him to the nearby general hospital for medical attention.
Following the incident, the entire building was sealed off to prevent any further accidents. Meanwhile, the landlord of the building was promptly arrested and taken into custody by police operatives from the Ikorodu Police Division, located on Sagamu Road, opposite Wema Bank in Ikorodu.
In a phone interview on Monday, Sadiq Adams Kiakia, a student and vice chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Committee, lambasted the school for its alleged negligence. He claimed that the institution’ s failure to provide adequate accommodation, coupled with the lack of reliable housing and stable power supply, ultimately led to the tragic death of the 100- level student, Emmanuel Nweke.
Kiakia said, ” Power supply in the area has been a major issue since the beginning of the year, with barely two hours of electricity available daily. The building is already deteriorating, and he tragically passed away before we could get him to the hospital” .
” We urgently need proper accommodation within the school. If there was on- campus housing, Nweke wouldn’ t have been staying in that building. Over 20 students lived there, and he (Nweke) had just paid his rent about two weeks ago. We need the school authorities to take immediate action” , he added.
When contacted on Monday about the incident and lack of accommodation for LASUSTECH students, the Deputy Director of Public Affairs, at the state Ministry of Education, Mr. Mahmud Hassan, neither picked up his phone nor responded to the WhatsApp message sent to him.
Additionally, when a news correspondent contacted the state police command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Monday, to inquire about the building owner’ s arrest, his phone rang unanswered.
The university’ s Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Ademola Aderogba, confirmed the incident to our correspondent, stating that the management was ” on top of the situation” .
