Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned that the funds allocated to Nigeria’ s health sector in the 2025 Budget must be transparently managed and not suffer the fate of previous public funds allegedly lost under bizarre circumstances involving animals such as snakes, termites, and monkeys.
The Bola Tinubu- led administration has earmarked $1. 07 billion for primary healthcare, in addition to the ₦2. 48 trillion initially proposed for the sector. Atiku, in a statement on Sunday, emphasized that with declining national resources and reduced foreign support for key healthcare services, every kobo must be accounted for.

He criticized the government’ s lack of transparency regarding the expenditure of these funds, questioning the sources of the additional $1. 07 billion, which he revealed comes largely from foreign loans and international donors. According to Atiku, Nigerians deserve full disclosure on the details of these loans, their repayment plans, and how the funds will be spent.
” It is crucial that Nigerians know the specifics of these loans and how the funds will be utilized, ” he stated, expressing concerns over the government’ s failure to invest in physical infrastructure within the health sector. He described the situation as suspicious, warning that without clear accountability mechanisms, the budget could be mismanaged.

He further criticized the government’ s misleading claims regarding the condition of Nigeria’ s tertiary hospitals, noting that these facilities still suffer from poor infrastructure and an unreliable power supply. Atiku argued that the Tinubu administration has failed in the health sector due to inadequate funding and a lack of transparency.
Atiku warned that without a clear framework for monitoring the $1. 07 billion health sector allocation, Nigerians may view the budget as another fraudulent scheme. He urged the administration to subject the funds to scrutiny by the National Assembly and implement public audit mechanisms to ensure proper oversight.
” If the Tinubu administration fails to provide a comprehensive framework for safeguarding this health sector investment or refuses to allow legislative scrutiny, it may be concluded that this is yet another case of fraud disguised as public interest spending, ” Atiku stated.
