In the annals of history, there have been many cases of religious leaders exploiting their followers for money and power. But few have faced the wrath of their congregation as brutally as Pastor James Mugo, the General Overseer of Wings of Blessings Africa Church.
According to reports, the Kenyan pastor had demanded ksh. 4200 (approximately 16 thousand naira) from every member of the church on New Year eve service to offer prayers to God for them to unlock the new year’ s blessing. He claimed that this was a divine instruction and that anyone who failed to comply would face a cursed year.
However, his scheme did not go down well with some of his church members, who felt that he was taking advantage of their faith and desperation. They confronted him and accused him of being a false prophet and a fraudster. A heated argument ensued, which soon turned violent. The angry members attacked the pastor and beat him mercilessly, leaving him with serious injuries.
Pastor Mugo was rushed to a hospital in Embu, a municipality in Kenya. The police have launched an investigation into the incident and are looking for the suspects who assaulted him. The church has also been sealed off by the authorities.
This is not the first time that Pastor Mugo has been involved in controversy. In 2020, he was arrested for allegedly defrauding a woman of ksh. 1. 5 million (approximately 5. 7 million naira) by promising to pray for her sick husband. He was later released on bail.
