In a tragic case of betrayal and violence, Chukwudi Onweniwe, a 22- year- old part- time student at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging for the rape and murder of his girlfriend, Nifemi Adeyeoye, in 2016. The verdict, delivered by a High Court in Akure, Ondo State, brought closure to a crime that shocked the community.
The gruesome events began on a seemingly ordinary day in 2016. Chukwudi, a student of the Department of Science and Laboratory Technology (SLT), lured Nifemi, an HND student at the same institution, to a farm near Alayere, Ogbese, under the guise of spending time together. According to Chukwudi’ s confession, he introduced Nifemi to his parents before leading her into the bush.
Chukwudi admitted to raping her and then strangling her to death. In his chilling statement to the police, he said, ” I only killed her for the fun of it. ” He claimed that the act was not premeditated, attributing his actions to a momentary lapse influenced by the devil.
Despite his initial attempt to kill Nifemi by strangulation, she was still alive when he revisited the scene the next day. Realizing this, Chukwudi used a stone to repeatedly hit her head until she succumbed to her injuries. Her body was left in the bush, where it was later discovered.
The crime came to light after a commercial motorcyclist reported suspicious activity involving Chukwudi and Nifemi. The police were alerted and launched an investigation. Evidence collected included Nifemi’ s belongings found in Chukwudi’ s room, such as her school bag, wallet, phone, and 22 passport photographs.
Inspector John Aderibigbe, a police officer involved in the case, testified that the accused had led investigators to the spot where he left Nifemi’ s body. The discovery of a blood- stained stone near her remains further implicated Chukwudi.
Witnesses, including Nifemi’ s mother, Mrs. Adeyeoye, and two motorcyclists, corroborated the timeline of events. Mrs. Adeyeoye recounted how her daughter had left home, saying she was visiting a friend, only for her to be reported missing. The devastating confirmation of Nifemi’ s death came when the police invited her to identify her daughter’ s corpse at the mortuary.
Chukwudi was charged in 2017 with four counts: endangering life, kidnapping, abduction, rape, and murder. The trial, presided over by Justice Samuel Bola, featured testimonies from five witnesses. Among them was a medical expert, Dr. Pelemo of Ondo State Specialist Hospital, who conducted the autopsy. The findings revealed abnormalities in Nifemi’ s neck and a fractured skull, consistent with blunt force trauma.
Justice Bola meticulously reviewed the evidence, which included Chukwudi’ s confession, the testimony of witnesses, and the physical evidence recovered. While the prosecution failed to conclusively prove the charge of rape, the judge found Chukwudi guilty of kidnapping, strangulation, and murder.
In his judgment, Justice Bola stated, ” Circumstantial evidence points to the fact that the accused committed the crime. He was last seen with the deceased, according to the testimonies of the motorcyclists, and her belongings were found in his room. ”
On the count of kidnapping, Chukwudi was sentenced to life imprisonment. For the charges of strangulation and murder, he was sentenced to death by hanging. The court’ s decision underscored the gravity of the crime and served as a warning against such heinous acts.
This tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of violence and betrayal. Nifemi, a promising student with her future ahead of her, was robbed of her life by someone she trusted. For Chukwudi, what he described as a ” moment of madness” led to irreversible consequences, not only for him but for the families of both the victim and the perpetrator.
