Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has strongly criticized the Nigerian police over the arrest of renowned human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, describing the operation as similar to a terrorist abduction.

Speaking during an X space conversation hosted by activist and #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, Yesufu did not mince words as she condemned the manner in which Farotimi was apprehended. She compared the police action to the tactics often used by terrorists to abduct innocent citizens.
” The way they abducted Farotimi is similar to how terrorists abduct Nigerians. They abducted him from Lagos and then drove him all the way to Ekiti by road, ” Yesufu revealed during the discussion.
Farotimi, who pleaded not guilty to 14 charges during his arraignment at the Ekiti State Magistrate Court last Tuesday, has been at the center of a growing public outcry over his detention. The charges, which were initially 16, were later amended by the prosecution. Despite calls for his release, the court adjourned his bail application to Friday, December 20, 2024, prolonging his stay in custody.
Yesufu warned that the oppressive actions of the authorities against Farotimi set a dangerous precedent. ” If the case of Dele Farotimi is allowed to thrive, more Nigerians would suffer oppressive tendencies of the government, ” she said.
Meanwhile, SaharaReporters highlighted that Farotimi had filed a preliminary objection, urging the court to dismiss a defamation suit brought against him by prominent lawyer Afe Babalola (SAN). Farotimi’ s defense team has criticized the charges as baseless and politically motivated.
