The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made significant progress in its fight against corruption, recovering assets worth over N248 billion, $105 million, and 753 duplexes in 2024. This update was shared by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) during a Strategic Communications Inter- Agency Policy Committee Meeting held yesterday. According to the Director of Legal at ONSA, Mr. Zakari Mijinyawa, the EFCC also achieved 3, 455 convictions by October this year, highlighting its effectiveness in tackling financial crimes.
In addition to these recoveries, a coordinated effort involving the military, other security agencies, and local vigilantes resulted in the rescue of 36 abducted farmers in the Northwest on December 8, 2024. This operation underscores the government’ s commitment to addressing insecurity and protecting citizens in vulnerable regions.
The military has also played a pivotal role in reducing oil theft, preventing losses valued at over N57. 05 billion. These efforts aim to safeguard the nation’ s revenue and strengthen economic stability. The EFCC has complemented these efforts by prosecuting several high- profile cases. Among those currently facing trial for financial crimes are four former governors, three ex- ministers, and a former Central Bank governor, signaling a renewed focus on accountability.
To enhance its operations, the EFCC introduced structural reforms, including the establishment of the Fraud Risk Assessment and Control (FRAC) department and the restructuring of its zonal offices. Additionally, it launched EFCC 97. 3FM to educate the public on preventing corruption and financial crimes. A national cybercrime dialogue held this year, with President Bola Tinubu in attendance, further highlighted the commission’ s dedication to addressing cyber threats.
Internationally, the EFCC has strengthened ties with agencies like the FBI and the Canadian Royal Mounted Police, enabling the recovery of assets for foreign fraud victims. Under the leadership of its chairman, Mr. Olukoyede, who serves as President of the Network of Anti- Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA), the EFCC has advanced regional anti- corruption initiatives.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) also reported significant achievements in 2024. Through its Constituency and Executive Projects’ Tracking Initiative (CEPTI), 1, 500 projects were monitored nationwide. The ICPC processed 851 petitions, investigated 243 cases, filed 63 in court, and secured 13 convictions, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and accountability. These efforts earned Nigeria a spot on the GlobE Network Steering Committee, enhancing its global standing in anti- corruption initiatives.
Meanwhile, the Armed Forces have intensified counter- terrorism operations across the country. In five key regions, they neutralized 8, 034 terrorists, arrested 11, 623 suspects, and rescued 6, 376 hostages. These combined efforts reflect the government’ s commitment to combating corruption, crime, and insecurity while fostering stability and progress nationwide.
