The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone E, has issued a stern 14- day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding urgent action on four abandoned major road projects in the northeast region. This move has increased pressure on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’ s administration as students threaten mass protests over the long- standing delays.
In a statement issued by the Zone E Coordinator, Umar Afkawa, NANS emphasized that contractors must return to the sites of the affected projects, or they will mobilize students and local communities for protests across Adamawa, Gombe, Taraba, and Borno states. The association listed the affected roads as Numan- Gombe, Numan- Jalingo, Damaturu- Buni Yafi, and Biu- Garkida roads.
Afkawa noted that the failure to complete these projects has caused ” untold hardships” for students, commuters, and residents. He added that repeated promises by the Federal Government to fix these critical roads have not been fulfilled.
The statement read, ” Failure to comply with these demands within the stipulated 14 days will lead to mass protests. The association will mobilize students and community members to demand action. It will also engage with relevant stakeholders to escalate concerns. ”
NANS also directed its concerns to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, urging him to provide a detailed timeline for the completion of the road projects. The student body called on the government to identify and address the challenges delaying progress.
