BUSTED! Soldiers Finally Arrest Notorious Bandit Leader After Allegedly Killing Traditional Ruler
Troops of the 1 Brigade, Nigerian Army, achieved a significant milestone in their ongoing efforts against banditry by capturing Bako Wurgi, a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer, in Zamfara State. Known as Baka NaGarba, Wurgi has been implicated in numerous high- profile crimes, including the assassination of the Sarkin Gobir of Sabon Birni, Alhaji Isa Mohammed Bawa.
The operation took place on December 14 around 10 p. m. in Shinkafi town, following precise intelligence reports indicating Wurgi was receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during a violent confrontation with a rival group. His condition, marked by severe cuts and gunshot wounds, ultimately led to his capture, as the troops were able to trace him to the hospital where he was hiding.
Zagazola Makama, a recognized counter- insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, confirmed the details of the operation through his social media platform. He reported that while two of Wurgi’ s accomplices managed to flee, another individual who assisted in transporting Wurgi via tricycle was apprehended. Makama highlighted Wurgi’ s central role in a series of kidnappings and murders, which included failed ransom negotiations that demanded cash and motorcycles.
He also shed light on Wurgi’ s connections to arms smuggling, suggesting an extensive international network. Notably, Wurgi is linked to another notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, through familial ties, with his son, Sani Duna, allegedly serving as a getaway biker for Turji. The timing of Wurgi’ s capture is particularly poignant, following the brutal murder of Alhaji Bawa, which had sent shockwaves throughout the nation. In August, reports revealed that the terrorists responsible for Bawa’ s death had demanded a ransom of N60 million and five motorcycles for the return of his body.
Tragically, despite Bawa’ s sincere appeal for help, he was ultimately killed by the terrorists. Wurgi’ s arrest is viewed as a crucial breakthrough in the fight against banditry in the region, expected to provide valuable insights into the complex networks involved in arms smuggling and kidnapping operations across Zamfara and beyond. In the aftermath of this operation, security forces are intensifying their efforts to apprehend Wurgi’ s accomplices and dismantle the criminal organizations associated with him.
