A heartbreaking incident occurred in Powishi Village, Kalmai District, Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State, when armed men, suspected to be herders, launched a brutal attack in the early hours of Thursday, December 12, 2024. The attackers, equipped with dangerous weapons and riding motorbikes, targeted the peaceful community, leaving destruction and sorrow in their wake.
The assault resulted in the tragic death of a cleric, Mallam Yusuf Akwara, who was known and respected within the community. In addition to taking his life, the assailants set several houses ablaze, destroying the homes and livelihoods of residents. The attackers also rustled an unknown number of livestock, further compounding the losses endured by the already shaken villagers.
Confirming the tragic event, ASP Buhari Abdullahi, the spokesperson for the Gombe State Police Command, released a statement detailing the swift response of law enforcement. He revealed that a combined team of police officers and personnel from the 301 Artillery Regiment, led by the Area Commander of Billiri, was promptly mobilized to address the situation.

Despite their rapid deployment, the attackers had fled the village before the arrival of security forces. However, neighboring villagers and security personnel managed to put out the fires, preventing further damage to the community.

In the aftermath of the attack, key figures, including the Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Usman, visited Powishi Village to assess the extent of the damage and console the grieving families.
Accompanying the Commissioner were the Commanding Officer of the 301 Artillery Regiment, the Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Chairperson of Billiri Local Government Area. Their presence was meant to reassure the community of ongoing efforts to address the situation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
To ensure the attackers are held accountable, the police have deployed a robust team of detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) along with personnel from specialized police units, including 34PMF and 59PMF. This team has been tasked with tracking and apprehending those responsible for the heinous act.
ASP Abdullahi urged the public to remain patient and to cooperate with the ongoing investigation. He stated: *” The Commissioner of Police appeals for calm and understanding as law enforcement agencies work tirelessly to uncover the identities of the assailants and ensure justice is served. ” *
This tragic incident has left Powishi Village reeling, with the loss of a respected community leader and widespread destruction of property.
