The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has condemned the invasion of his palace by security forces on Friday, describing it as an attempt to incite violence. Speaking during a sermon, the Emir emphasized that certain external forces were intent on destabilizing peace in Kano by provoking unrest and shedding blood.
In his address to worshippers, Emir Sanusi urged restraint and advised against taking the law into their hands. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and unity in the face of provocations.
Earlier, reports indicated that the Emir’ s palace in Kofar Kudu had been surrounded by armed policemen and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). The security forces blocked entry and exit points, creating significant tension. The Emir was scheduled to escort the newly- appointed Wamban Kano, Munir Sanusi, to his district posting in Bichi, an event that was disrupted by the heavy security presence.
In his sermon, the Emir addressed the situation directly, stating, ” What’ s going on has to do with some persons who want shedding of blood in Kano. In the recent past, they’ ve made concerted efforts to provoke our people to resort to violence by taking the law into their hands. I urge you, my people, don’ t fall for their cheap plans. Whoever comes to foment trouble in Kano aims to destroy our heritage. Therefore, let’ s endure and be patient; patience is not cowardice. Let’ s keep praying. ”
The Emir’ s call for calm was echoed by the Kano State Government, which expressed dismay over the siege. Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, the Secretary to the State Government, described the actions of the security forces as provocative and unnecessary. He alleged that the federal government was backing those responsible for the invasion, further escalating tensions between state and federal authorities.
” There is absolutely no security issue to warrant the deployment of security forces in these numbers. Some disgruntled elements, supported by Abuja, are trying to cause a crisis in our state, ” Bichi said. He added that the state government was invited by the Emir to witness the installation of the district head of Bichi, but security forces claimed there was an order from above prohibiting the ceremony.
Despite the disruption, Bichi assured that the state government would take measures to ensure the installation of the district head proceeded as planned. ” We will deploy our resources to achieve this goal and ensure peace is maintained in Kano, ” he asserted.
