In the wake of the tragic demise of Stephen Afolabi Opaso, a 19- year- old Nigerian student at the University of Manitoba, Canada, Mr. Sunday Asefon, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Student Engagement, has released a statement expressing profound sorrow and indignation.
Known affectionately as Zigi among peers, Stephen Opaso was fatally shot by the Winnipeg Police Service in Manitoba on December 31, 2023. The incident unfolded during an encounter in which Opaso, allegedly in the midst of a mental health crisis, was wielding a knife.
Mr. Asefon decried the killing as vicious, cruel, and heartless, emphasizing a commitment to collaborate with Canadian authorities, including the High Commission of Canada in Nigeria and Nigeria’ s Minister of Foreign Affairs. The aim is to ensure a comprehensive investigation and prevent the matter from being overlooked.
Addressing concerns raised by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Asefon pointed to a perceived racial motivation behind the incident, given that Opaso was unarmed with a firearm at the time.
He called for calm among Nigerian students and pledged to diligently pursue the case until an accurate account of the student’ s death is obtained from Canadian authorities.
Asefon reassured the public that ongoing efforts are in place to secure appropriate compensation for Opaso’ s grieving family. He urged Nigerian students in Canada to maintain peace, assuring them of his office’ s commitment to ensuring justice prevails in this tragic circumstance.
