A wave of outrage has swept across Nigeria, culminating in a nationwide protest scheduled for December 10. The protest, tagged ” Nationwide/Global Protest Against Nigerian Judiciary, ” is a direct response to the arrest and detention of activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi. Farotimi was remanded in prison over a defamation petition filed by Ekiti strongman Afe Babalola.
The protest, led by the Take It Back movement, will converge on multiple locations, including Afe Babalola’ s Chamber in Lagos, the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja, and the police headquarters in Ado- Ekiti. Protesters will also gather at King’ s College Campus in London, where Babalola donated millions of British pounds to advance human rights and education for African students.
Farotimi’ s arrest has sparked widespread condemnation, with many viewing it as a blatant attempt to silence dissenting voices. The activist was picked up by armed policemen at his office and swiftly arraigned before a magistrate court in Ekiti. The charges against him include cybercrime and defamation, allegations that Farotimi’ s supporters vehemently deny.
The King’ s College London has also been drawn into the controversy, with reports emerging that the institution is in panic mode over Babalola’ s scandal. The college has allegedly contacted Amnesty International for advisory on how to handle the situation.
As tensions continue to rise, Nigerians are taking to the streets to demand justice for Farotimi. The protest on December 10 is expected to be a massive show of solidarity, with many prominent activists and civil society organizations throwing their weight behind the movement.
In a statement, Omoyele Sowore, leader of the Take It Back movement, emphasized the need for Nigerians to stand up against injustice. ” We will not stand idly by while our rights are trampled upon, ” Sowore said. ” We demand the immediate release of Dele Farotimi and an end to the harassment of activists and dissenting voices” .
