Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, who is also an Islamic leader, has blamed the greed of Nigerian politicians for the pervasive decline in societal values.
On Tuesday in Abuja, Sanusi addressed a room full of politicians from various political parties, including the People’ s Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and urged the country’ s leaders to prioritize integrity over material wealth.
The emir believes that a person’ s genuine identity is determined by their character, integrity, and acts rather than their formal title, riches, or material belongings.
Sanusi, speaking at the 2024 Annual Conference of the Nkata Ndi Inyom Igbo (NNII) in the nation’ s capital, argued that politicians should be characterized by their character rather than their titles, such as senator, governor, or emir.
” Whether you’ re a senator, an emir, a governor, or a wealthy individual, it’ s what you are, not who you are.
” Owning a house, a large automobile, or an airplane does not define you. You are the man who owns the house. They are things outside of yourself.
” You can have two senators: one is an honest, good, kind, and generous man, and the other is a robber. They are both Senators.
” Who you are determines whether you are a good man or a robber. You are honest or dishonest, kind or cruel, trustworthy or traitorous, sincere or liar; it is who you are and what matters most” .
Sanusi added that public office is a privilege granted by God and a test of how leaders use their power to serve the people.
He stressed that the true legacy of any leader should be what they do for the society, not the material wealth they accumulate.
Sanusi further criticised the current state of Nigerian politics where party affiliations often shift without any clear ideological basis.
” And I apologize that this is a room full of politicians. Today you’ re in PDP, tomorrow in APC, and the next day in APGA. Why? Because the focus is on who we are.
” We’ re not even sure what the parties stand for. There is no party that we can call progressive or loyal to the masses since they are all the same people.
” I believe this is why this conversation is so important. It is a really simple conversation, but it is necessary to have because as we face severe economic situations, insecurity, and uncertainty, the urge to lose who we are grows.
” People feel they have to steal to pay school fees, they have to be dishonest to eat food. Women have to be prostitutes to live. We have to get to a point where we remind people of what is important in life.
