President Bola Tinubu is deeply troubled by the recent surge in drug prices and the scarcity of essential medicines in Nigeria, according to the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Tunji Alausa. The minister disclosed the president’ s concerns after the inauguration of a new clinical complex at the Federal Medical Centre, Ebutte Metta, Lagos.

Expressing the president’ s distress, Alausa highlighted the escalating cost of drugs and the departure of multinational pharmaceutical companies, such as GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), as pivotal issues. GSK had announced its exit from Nigeria in August 2023, leading to a subsequent increase in the prices of its medications.
Emphasizing President Tinubu’ s commitment to building a sustainable and comprehensive healthcare system for Nigerians, Alausa stated that the president is dedicated to addressing the root causes of the healthcare challenges.
Despite acknowledging the current difficulties, the minister urged Nigerians to be patient, assuring them that improvements would come in the near future.
Alausa outlined a multifaceted approach to tackle the problem. First, the government is addressing the issue of counterfeiting by collaborating with regulatory bodies like NAFDAC and Customs to curb the importation of counterfeit drugs. Additionally, efforts are underway to boost local pharmaceutical production through partnerships with domestic companies.
