Governor suspends solar street light project over high cost
The Anambra State Government has suspended the installation of solar-powered street lights in Awka metropolis, which would have cost the state over N1 billion.
This decision was made during the 35th Anambra State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Awka.

During last week’s Executive Council meeting, three companies were listed as having been awarded the contract expected to be completed in three months.
According to the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, the council extensively debated the memo for the installation of the solar-powered street lights and resolved that the unit cost was too high and required a downward review.
It was gathered that the memo was stepped down and rescheduled for re-presentation at the next State Executive Council meeting, where all specifications will be available.
“This move is a prudent decision to ensure the project’s execution at a reasonable cost. The previous release incorrectly stated that the street light project had been awarded.
“The government regrets the mistake. The public will be updated on the project’s status once a decision is made”, the EXCO was said to have decided.
