Real Madrid team bus crashes after Liverpool defeat in Champions League
Real Madrid’s team bus was involved in a motorway collision following their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on the M40, involved the stationary coach being struck by a lorry.
Fortunately, no players or staff were on board, as the vehicle was being used to transport the team’s kit back to Madrid.
Social media footage of the aftermath showed the luxury coach, unveiled in October 2024 to mirror the revamped Bernabéu Stadium’s hi-tech branding, stopped on the motorway.
While teams typically fly home immediately after European matches, the team’s coach still needed to make the journey back to Spain. The M40 is a conventional route for vehicles traveling from the northwest of England to the southern coast.
The Spanish giants, who have had a rocky start to their Champions League title defense, suffered their third loss in five European games.
Goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo sealed Liverpool’s victory, while Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé missed a penalty, further highlighting his recent struggles.
Jude Bellingham, reflecting on the loss, defended his teammate. “Kylian is a wonderful player, but the pressure is humongous,” he said. “The penalty is not why we lost the game. Kylian can keep his head high, and I know for sure he will produce many more big moments for this club.”
This crash marks the second such incident involving the Los Blancos coach in 2024.
Back in February, the team was involved in a collision with a white Toyota during a 100-mile bus journey in Germany.
The mishap occurred when Carlo Ancelotti’s squad traveled to face RB Leipzig and had to land in Erfurt due to an airport strike.
The Wednesday crash comes as Real Madrid continues to navigate a challenging season in Europe, adding logistical issues to their on-field struggles.
