The situation for Nigerian pastors and residents in the Idabato II community of Cameroon has taken a dramatic turn following the abduction of the community’ s Divisional Officer, Ewane Roland, by armed men in early October. This incident has led to a harsh crackdown by Cameroonian authorities, targeting Nigerians in the former Bakassi Peninsula.
The community, predominantly populated by Nigerians, has been under intense pressure since the abduction. The former chairman of the Yoruba community in the area, Eniola Alabo, revealed during an interview that Cameroonian soldiers have been raiding the area. ” The Gendarmerie came to the community and started shooting sporadically into the air on the day they arrested some of these Nigerians, ” Alabo stated.
As part of the clampdown, several Nigerian pastors have been arrested for allegedly defying orders to cease church activities. The detained pastors include Adeleke Omoniye, Cascar Ubom, Etim Asuquo, Olamide Ayeye, and Umoh Atete. According to Alabo, soldiers stormed the Assembly Church of God during a Sunday service and whisked the pastors away to an undisclosed location.
A local leader, Johnson (not his real name), disclosed that the pastors’ whereabouts remain unknown. ” The Cameroonian soldiers took the pastors away. A few days later, we heard they had been released, but we’ ve not seen them, ” he said.
Beyond the arrests, Nigerians in Idabato have been subjected to a total lockdown ordered by South- West Governor Bernard Okalia. The lockdown has severely disrupted daily life, forcing shops and churches to close and leaving many economically handicapped. One tragic consequence of this lockdown was the death of Esther Okon, a Nigerian woman who bled to death after childbirth due to a lack of access to medical care.
