Following the peaceful agreement signed by Gov. Siminalayi Fubara and Nyesom Wike, David Briggs, Member of the Rivers State Elders Forum, stated in a video posted by Arise TV that the gathering wasn’t a typical meeting where opinions are exchanged and resolutions are collaboratively reached. Instead, he claimed that the president entered with a pre-written resolution and addressed the attendees.
Briggs asserted that the President declared the document in his hands a “presidential proclamation” or “presidential directive.” He added that the president reportedly emphasised his authority and position as the head of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, warning that non-compliance would have consequences. Briggs interprets this approach as undemocratic, describing it as a threat in layman’s terms.
According to him, “I was there, so I’m a witness, so what I say is primary, not secondary. We were invited to a meeting, but that was not a meeting because a meeting means an opinion will be sought. There’ll be discussions between both parties, and resolutions will be reached, but that is not what happened. What happened is that Mr. President walked in with a written resolution, addressed us, and declared that what he has in his hands is a presidential proclamation, a presidential directive, and, at a point, withdrew and emphasised the fact that he’s the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Therefore, he can whip, and anybody who dares to say no to what he’s saying has consequences. That is not democratic; that, in a simple layman’s words, is a threat.”……
