Meet The Only Village In The World Where There Are No Men And Why
Umoja is the name of the small town where you will be. The group was started in 1990 by fifteen women who had been sexually assaulted by British soldiers stationed in the area. Some of these women had been sexually abused in the past.
In recent years, the number of women living in Umoja has grown because they are running away from Samburu cultural practices like child marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), domestic violence, and rape. Umoja is a safe place for women who are trying to get away from these harmful cultural norms. Rebecca Lolosoli, who is also known as the matriarch of the village, started Umoja.
It is thought that there are about 47 women and 200 children living in Umoja at the moment. These smart women and girls bring in a steady income, which lets them give everyone in the community food, clothes, and a place to live, even though everyone else in the community lives very cheaply.
Groups of safari visitors usually stay at a campground along the river that is about a kilometer away and is run by the villagers who are in charge of the community. In addition to these tourists, Umoja is also visited by a large number of tourists who are traveling through the nearby natural areas.
The local women have decided to charge a small fee for tourists to enter the hamlet. They hope that once the tourists are inside, they will go to the craft center where the women work and buy some of the jewelry that the women have made.
