According to a senior civil servant who spoke to Daily Trust on condition of anonymity, he was forced to purchase over N200, 000 worth of beer as a levy before being allowed to harvest his Benniseed farm. The amount of the levy varies depending on the size of the farm, ranging from N20, 000 to N100, 000.
Several farming communities, including Baka, Kasakuru, Majowere, Digun, Nyapori, Buzi, Dare, and Sakala, have been affected by this bandit levy. Mallam Dantala Bello, a resident of Ardo- Kola, confirmed that paying the levy before harvest has become a grim reality for farmers in the area. He added that some farmers simply abandon their farms if the levy is too high, unable to bear the financial burden.

The situation is further complicated by the bandits’ network of informants. Sources claim that the bandits have individuals who tip them off about farmers coming to harvest their crops. This allows the bandits to quickly ambush the farmers, often armed and in large groups, both during the day and night.
