Simon Ekpa, a self- proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Government in Exile, has openly rejected calls from Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to end the weekly sit- at- home protests in southeastern Nigeria.
Speaking during a special episode of 90MinutesAfrica hosted by Rudolf Okonkwo on Tuesday, Ekpa declared that he would only consider Kanu’ s directive if the IPOB leader were to meet him face- to- face in Finland.
” I won’ t listen to Nnamdi Kanu’ s instructions to end sit- at- home, ” Ekpa stated. ” He must come to Finland and speak to me directly as a free man before I will consider stopping it. ”
Nnamdi Kanu’ s Stance On Sit- at- Home Orders
In July 2023, Nnamdi Kanu had, through a letter read by his special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, instructed Simon Ekpa to stop calling for sit- at- home protests. Kanu emphasized that anyone continuing the enforcement of such orders could no longer be considered his follower.
Despite this directive, Ekpa has insisted that he would not comply unless Kanu personally visits him in Finland. ” Even if they release him today and he remains in Nigeria, I will not stop, ” Ekpa vowed.
The Purpose Of Sit- At- Home Protests
Simon Ekpa defended the sit- at- home exercise as a critical strategy for achieving Biafra’ s independence. According to him, the protests have significantly impacted Nigeria’ s economy, undermined the government’ s authority in the southeast, and demonstrated the people’ s rejection of Nigerian rule.
” We are employing four mechanisms for Biafra’ s freedom: political, diplomatic, self- defense or armed struggle, and civil disobedience, ” Ekpa explained. ” These approaches are working perfectly to delegitimize Nigeria and push for our independence. ”
Criticism And Justification
Critics have pointed out that the sit- at- home orders disrupt daily life, affecting traders, students, and other residents in the southeast. However, Ekpa dismissed these concerns, describing the hardships as necessary sacrifices for a brighter future.
” Freedom comes at a cost, ” he argued. ” The traders will have better business opportunities, and the students will attend improved schools once Biafra is free. This is the price they must pay for freedom. ”
