Christopher Luka, a resident of Daika, recounted the incident: ” It was around 8: 30 p. m. on Sunday. Fwangshak was returning home when he was suddenly ambushed by armed men who shot him. He died on the spot. ” According to Luka, the community gathered to mourn and lay Lesun to rest on Monday morning. The shock and grief within the community are palpable, as residents fear for their safety amid the escalating violence.
This incident brings back harrowing memories of the large- scale violence that erupted in Mangu in May 2023, in which over 200 civilians were reportedly killed in attacks attributed to suspected militia groups. At the time, the Plateau State Government had imposed a curfew and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice. However, the recurrence of such attacks has left communities questioning the effectiveness of these measures and expressing frustration over the lack of security.

The Plateau State Police Command has been notably silent regarding the recent killing, as attempts to reach their spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful. Calls to his phone went unanswered, and no official statement has yet been issued to address the growing security concerns in Daika and the surrounding areas.
This latest tragedy in Daika underscores the need for a stronger, more proactive approach to addressing the security challenges facing communities across Plateau State, with residents hoping for meaningful action to prevent further loss of life.
