Simon Ekpa, a prominent figure advocating for Biafran independence, has expressed his disapproval of President Bola Tinubu’ s decision to appoint Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu- Ojukwu as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
Ekpa, known for his support of Biafra’ s self- governance movement, responded critically, suggesting that the ministerial role lacks significance in the eyes of Biafrans. He stated, ” While they are deceiving themselves with Bianca, tell them that tomorrow being Monday, Bianca and her village people will be sitting at home in compliance with Biafra Government, not Nigeria Government. ” This statement highlights Ekpa’ s strong stance on the Biafra cause, which rejects Nigeria’ s authority in the southeastern region.
The Nigerian Presidency recently announced that President Tinubu would swear in Ambassador Odumegwu- Ojukwu, along with six other ministerial nominees, at the State House in Abuja. The decision to include Odumegwu- Ojukwu— a notable diplomat and widow of late Biafran leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu- Ojukwu— comes as part of a broader restructuring of Tinubu’ s cabinet. Her appointment has attracted attention given her symbolic connection to the Biafra movement, sparking mixed reactions within Nigerian political circles.
In addition to Odumegwu- Ojukwu, six other nominees will be joining the federal cabinet in various key roles. Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda has been appointed as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, a role crucial in addressing Nigeria’ s widespread poverty and social challenges. Former police minister Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi has been assigned to lead the Ministry of Labour and Employment, a strategic position given the pressing need for labor reforms and job creation in Nigeria.
Among the new ministers is also Jumoke Oduwole, appointed as Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, with a focus on strengthening Nigeria’ s trade relations and supporting domestic industries. Idi Mukhtar Maiha will serve as Minister of Livestock Development, a newly created role intended to improve livestock management and address pastoralist issues, which have sparked security concerns in recent years. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata will assume the position of Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, where he will oversee initiatives to address Nigeria’ s housing deficit. Finally, Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmad has been appointed as Minister of State for Education, tasked with advancing educational reforms to meet the demands of a rapidly growing population.
President Tinubu’ s cabinet reshuffle is viewed as an effort to address critical areas of national concern, such as employment, education, trade, and housing. However, the inclusion of Bianca Odumegwu- Ojukwu in the cabinet remains a contentious issue, especially among Biafra advocates like Simon Ekpa.
