In a series of coordinated military efforts, Nigerian troops have apprehended a top commander identified as a founding figure of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the armed wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The apprehended individuals include key figures within the separatist organization, as well as local militant leaders operating in Imo and Abia States.
Among those detained is Pius Iguh, who, according to military sources, played a foundational role in the establishment of ESN. This arrest comes as part of an intensified campaign by Operation Udoka, aimed at combating insurgency and destabilizing terrorist networks across southeastern Nigeria.
In an official statement, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, outlined the progress made by troops stationed at various strategic points, including Forward Operating Base (FOB) Orsu, in executing high- stakes raids across Imo State. According to Buba, the successful detention of Pius Iguh marked a breakthrough in the ongoing operations.
” Troops at Forward Operation Base, Orsu, conducted a sting operation that led to the capture of a high- ranking IPOB terrorist leader, ” Buba noted, underscoring the meticulous planning involved in these operations.
Military sources revealed that the offensive against IPOB, initiated from October 15 to 18, spanned multiple locations, with engagements taking place in Orsu, Obubra, and Arochukwu. These coordinated offensives reportedly led to the neutralization of 24 suspected terrorists and the liberation of a kidnapped civilian. This mission forms part of a broader national security strategy aiming to dismantle insurgent networks across Nigeria.
Additionally, in a separate set of operations carried out over the past week, troops reportedly neutralized 140 insurgents and detained 135 suspects in various theatres of operation nationwide. These missions, Buba noted, were accompanied by significant recoveries of illicitly acquired weaponry and crude oil resources from organized crime rings.
The military’ s actions also targeted illegal oil operations in the Niger Delta region, resulting in the confiscation of over a million liters of crude oil. Authorities estimated that these seizures prevented the theft of oil valued at approximately N1. 7 billion, adding an economic dimension to the security- focused military campaign.
The recent operations underscore the Nigerian government’ s increased emphasis on curtailing the influence of IPOB and related separatist factions. IPOB, which advocates for the establishment of an independent state for the Igbo people, has been designated a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government. The ESN, which operates as the militant arm of IPOB, has been implicated in numerous violent confrontations with security forces over the years.
Efforts to contain IPOB’ s influence have become more pronounced following the government’ s crackdown on separatist activities. Despite these efforts, the group continues to exert influence across various communities in southeastern Nigeria, occasionally sparking deadly clashes with federal troops.
