In a renewed demand to the Nigerian government, the Biafra government led by Simon Ekpa has issued a 72- hour ultimatum calling for the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), along with other detained South- Easterners across Nigeria. Ekpa, a prominent Biafran separatist, claims the continued detention of Kanu and other South- Easterners is exacerbating tensions in the region.
Since his repatriation from Kenya, Kanu has remained in custody, a matter that has amplified unrest in the South- East. This week, a two- day sit- at- home protest immobilized the region, attributed to a viral video declaration urging civil disobedience. Both Ekpa and IPOB disclaimed responsibility for this lockdown, but the protest underscored the underlying discontent surrounding Kanu’ s detention.
In an official statement on Thursday shared via his social media platform, Ekpa demanded the release of all South- Eastern detainees held in various correctional facilities across Nigeria. Additionally, Ekpa urged judicial officials of South- East origin currently serving in other parts of Nigeria to return to the region, positioning this as a critical aspect of their support for Biafra’ s cause. The ultimatum, which concludes on October 27, 2024, was announced following an emergency cabinet meeting held by the Biafra government.
” The Biafra Government, in an emergency cabinet meeting today, 24. 10. 2024, voted and approved a resolution to demand the Nigerian government return every Biafran being detained outside Biafraland within 72 hours, ” Ekpa declared. He emphasized that if the Nigerian government fails to comply with these demands, the Biafran administration will implement a lockdown on all federal institutions, including courts, within the South- East region starting October 29, 2024.
Yet, opposition to the Biafran movement is also evident, with critics arguing that its divisive tactics, such as sit- at- home orders and violent protests, have negatively impacted the region’ s economic stability and public safety. For instance, the recent two- day lockdown crippled businesses, disrupted education, and affected the daily lives of millions. These shutdowns, however, are defended by Biafran activists who see them as necessary steps to emphasize their discontent with the federal government’ s handling of Kanu’ s case and the region’ s broader grievances.
Nigeria’ s government has consistently rejected Biafra’ s calls for secession, maintaining that the country must remain united. Nigerian authorities view IPOB as an illegal organization and have prosecuted many of its members under terrorism- related charges. Although the government has faced criticism from human rights advocates for its handling of Kanu’ s case, it has upheld its stance, seeing the detention as crucial for national security and stability.
