The governments of Russia and Togo have reached an agreement to open their respective embassies next year, President Vladimir Putin has confirmed.
Putin announced the resolution in Moscow during a meeting with Togo’s President of the Council of Ministers, Faure Gnassingbé, who was on a working visit.
The Russian leader said that despite the absence of embassies, trade and economic ties have developed and are progressing at a commendable pace.
Putin hopes both sides will maintain and accelerate the trajectory after the establishment of embassies and the commencement of the intergovernmental commission’s work.
On cultural partnership, currently centered on education, he said hundreds of Togelese are studying in Russia, with over 80 on state-funded programs.
“These are talented young people; I am confident they will make a significant contribution to the development of their homeland in the future,” the president added.
In his remarks, Gnassingbé told Putin that the opening of embassies will allow the nations to enhance bilateral cooperation and foster business and trade in key sectors.
“We are entering a new epoch in our relations owing to the opening of diplomatic missions,” he stated. This year marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of Russia-Togo relations.
