The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) of Nigeria has reported a major breakthrough in its ongoing operations against terrorism in Northern Nigeria. According to a statement released on Friday by Major General Buba Edward, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Nigerian troops have successfully eliminated 96 terrorists and arrested 227 suspects, including a high- profile terrorist commander.
One of the key developments in these operations was the capture of Usman Maisaje, a close associate of the notorious terrorist leader Kachalla Boka, who remains at large. General Edward highlighted the importance of Maisaje’ s arrest, noting that he has been cooperative with the military and has provided critical intelligence that will assist in future operations against terrorist groups in the region.
In his remarks, General Edward emphasized the DHQ’ s commitment to intensifying efforts to combat terrorism and enhance the safety of citizens in Northern Nigeria. He stated that the ongoing military operations are part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at dismantling terrorist networks and restoring peace to affected areas.
During the past week alone, troops made substantial progress in their operations. General Edward reported, ” During the week, troops neutralized 96 terrorists, arrested 227 persons, and rescued 157 kidnapped hostages. ” He further elaborated on the significance of Maisaje’ s arrest, describing him as a notorious terrorist commander and a valuable source of intelligence for the military.
In addition to counter- terrorism efforts, the DHQ also provided updates on operations against oil theft in the South- South region of Nigeria. Troops recovered crude oil valued at approximately ₦712 million and arrested 45 individuals involved in oil theft.
Furthermore, General Edward reported the recovery of a significant cache of weapons and ammunition. Troops confiscated 71 assorted firearms and 1, 463 rounds of ammunition, which included 50 AK- 47 rifles, 16 fabricated rifles, five Dane guns, five pump- action guns, five locally made pistols, and one revolver pistol. The ammunition recovered consisted of various types, including rounds for AK- 47 rifles and other firearms. Additionally, troops seized 19 vehicles, 23 motorcycles, and the sum of ₦4, 087, 630 and 46, 000 CFA francs among other items.
