Chief Olabode George, former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has disclosed how President Bola Tinubu personally intervened to stop him from leaving Nigeria after the latter’ s election victory. George, a long- time critic of Tinubu, had previously vowed to leave the country if Tinubu became president.
In a recent interview on Arise TV, George shared that Tinubu sent his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, to convince him to reconsider his decision. Reflecting on the events leading up to the 2023 presidential election, George recounted how Tinubu’ s team reached out to him after he publicly expressed his intention to leave the country.
” During the campaign period, I clearly stated that if by any chance Bola Tinubu won the election, I was going to leave Nigeria, ” George said. ” Once they heard that, Tinubu sent Femi Gbajabiamila, who is like a younger brother to me, to appeal to me and urge me to stay calm. They knew they had wronged me, and they apologized. ”
In 2022, George had openly criticized Tinubu’ s candidacy, questioning his capacity to lead the country and vowing to relocate if Tinubu became president. At the time, George said, ” I will move away from Nigeria. I’ ll leave because he will be your representative on the international stage. What investment will he bring here? This is not the kind of person we can hand over this massive country to manage. ”
George’ s comments came amid tensions within the PDP during the 2023 presidential election campaign. He highlighted how internal disputes escalated within the party, particularly around the time of the presidential convention. According to George, these disagreements were not properly addressed, leading to further divisions.
George urged PDP leaders, particularly Atiku Abubakar and Nyesom Wike, to put aside personal grievances and work towards rebuilding the party. He emphasized that while every organization faces crises, the ability to resolve them is crucial for moving forward.
” This crisis didn’ t start now, ” George stated. ” It started during the presidential convention. Atiku and Wike should calm down, and we should hold a meeting of the elders to resolve these issues, tracing them back to where everything began to fall apart. “
