Inspector Josephine, a female police officer with the Isheri Oshun Division of the Lagos State Command, is currently dealing with the fallout from an incident involving Mrs. Nneka Rose Chiedu, a woman she was directed to serve with an invitation letter related to criminal allegations.
According to reports, Mrs. Chiedu not only humiliated Inspector Josephine but also assaulted her by repeatedly slapping her, confidently stating that there would be no repercussions for her actions. The incident highlights serious concerns about the treatment of police officers while performing their duties.
P. M. EXPRESS reported that after the altercation, other officers mobilized to arrest Mrs. Chiedu and took her to the station. However, she was released shortly afterward, allegedly due to intervention from a person of influence.
Sources indicate that Mrs. Chiedu contacted one Alhaji Alaba, who reportedly instructed the police to release her. This sequence of events has sparked an outcry from civil society organizations, who are calling for justice on behalf of Inspector Josephine and demanding accountability from the police authorities.
The incident has prompted a response from the Association for Media and Public Empowerment Foundation (AMPEF). The organization’ s president, Comrade Prince Saviour Iche, expressed his outrage over the treatment of Inspector Josephine, arguing that no police officer should face such indignities while on duty. Comrade Iche has urged the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to intervene and ensure that Mrs. Chiedu faces prosecution for her actions. He emphasized that allowing such incidents to go unaddressed could damage police morale and hinder their performance, as officers may feel unsupported by the institutions meant to protect them.
The assault reportedly took place after a female pastor filed a complaint with the police, stating that her husband had taken their children and kept them at Mrs. Chiedu’ s residence in Ajao Estate. In response, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Isheri Oshun Division, SP Uzoma Martin, directed Inspector Josephine to serve Mrs. Chiedu with an invitation letter at her water factory. Instead of complying, Mrs. Chiedu responded aggressively, leaving the inspector embarrassed and unprotected.
When a correspondent from P. M. EXPRESS visited the Isheri Oshun Division, he was informed that the DPO had been advised not to detain Mrs. Chiedu, who was subsequently released on bail by an undisclosed individual.
The DPO later stated that there are plans to charge Mrs. Chiedu for her actions. However, questions remain about whether this will indeed happen, given the influence Mrs. Chiedu appears to wield within the police structure. The situation underscores the ongoing challenge of ensuring accountability within law enforcement and the need for mechanisms to protect officers as they perform their duties.
