Ezekiel Iheazor, the President General of the Umunze Progressive Union (UPU), and Nze Ikechukwu Okoli, a notable chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). The kidnapping, which has sent shockwaves through the community, occurred during a rainstorm at Okoli’ s residence in Lomu village. According to reports published by Vanguard, the abduction took place while Iheazor was visiting Okoli at his home. Eyewitnesses recount the attackers taking advantage of the downpour, as it provided a cover for their actions. As the rain fell heavily, gunshots rang out, and the assailants stormed the residence, abducting both men. The attackers fled in a Highlander jeep, leaving behind a scene of chaos and fear. A resident, reflecting on the growing concern in Umunze, described the event in stark terms: ” It’ s true, Umunze is in a state of confusion. Our President General and Iykon (Okoli’ s nickname) were both kidnapped. Today is Nkwo, our main market day, and the rain was coming down hard when it all happened. I heard loud gunshots, but I couldn’ t leave my house because of the rain. When it finally eased, I reached out to some friends who were near the market. They confirmed that nothing had occurred there. Shortly after, a community leader informed me about the kidnapping. ” The aftermath of the kidnapping was evident at the scene of the crime. Iheazor’ s car was found abandoned at Okoli’ s residence, amplifying the growing sense of unease. As word of the incident spread, fear and uncertainty began to grip the community, especially given the absence of any communication from the kidnappers. The lack of information on the victims’ whereabouts or the kidnappers’ demands has only intensified the anxiety.
So far, local authorities have yet to provide substantial updates on the situation. The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, acknowledged that he had not yet received official details about the incident. However, he did offer some clarification on the terms being used in the reports. Ikenga noted that there is a distinction between an abduction and a kidnapping, emphasizing that kidnappers usually demand a ransom. Despite this clarification, the police are actively investigating the case, and Ikenga mentioned that he would contact the Umunze Divisional Police Officer to gather more information. The abduction has plunged Umunze into a state of fear and uncertainty, as residents worry about the fate of their community leaders. While the police are working to understand the details of the case, no solid leads have been reported, and the kidnappers have yet to make contact.
