ANOTHER WAHALA! Days After Tinubu Increased ‘Corpers’ Allawee’, See What ASUU Plans To Do To Nigerian Students
The Academic Staff Union Of Universities, ASUU, has said its members could embark on an industrial action over the refusal of the Federal Government to address its demands.
This is even as the association implored Nigerians to hold the Federal Government responsible for any upheaval in Nigeria’s public universities.
ASUU threat of strike is contained in a statement signed by the union’s Federal University, Dutse, FUD, Chairman, Comrade Dr Salim Ahmad.
According to him, the president Bola Tinubu-led administration, like its predecessor, has not shsown any desire to meet with ASUU to discuss issues in the agreement and other resolution between the Federal Government and the union.
The union noted that over the past four years, Nigeria’s public universities have been in a state of industrial disharmony, leading to two costly and avoidable strike actions.
“The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has made several concerted efforts to dialogue with government officials, including the President, with a view to addressing the outstanding issues in the agreement and the various memoranda signed between the Union and the Federal Government.
” Unfortunately, the Tinubu administration, like the Buhari’s, has been unyielding.
“The nonchalant attitude of the administration to our legitimate and reasonable demands compelled the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU, following wide consultations, to convene a meeting at the University of Ibadan from 17th to 18th August, 2024, where it exhaustively deliberated on the contending issues and resolved to give a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria to address them.
This comes off the heels of the imminent increase in the allowances paid to the members of the National Youth Service Corps scheme made by the federal government from N33,000 to N77,000.
In a statement on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Caroline Embu, said the increment was in line with the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
Embu quoted a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024 and signed by the Chairman, Ekpo Nta.
“Prior to this, the Director General, NYSC Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had paid an advocacy visit to the Chairman in which he solicited for a robust welfare package for Corps Members.
“The NYSC Boss is thankful to the Federal Government for the timely gesture and is optimistic that it will not only bring much needed succour to the Corps Members, but also boost their morale and motivate them to do even more, in their service to the nation,” Embu said.
