As the people of Edo State anxiously await the official results of the 2024 governorship election, Asue Ighodalo, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has raised serious concerns about the transparency of the process.
Ighodalo has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the police of compromising the integrity of the election, suggesting there may be an attempt to undermine the will of the voters.
In an interview with Super FM Benin, which was aired on Sunday morning, September 22, and reported by Legit. ng, Ighodalo expressed his disappointment and frustration over the handling of the election results. He claimed that there were signs of collusion between INEC and the police, working in a manner that he said could not be healthy for democracy in Nigeria.
Ighodalo stated, ” There are too many things going on all of a sudden. There seems to be INEC complicity, police complicity working together. And this cannot be right for democracy in this country. They are trying to subvert the will of the people of Edo state, and it will not happen. By God’ s grace, it cannot happen. Edo state people would stand and fight for their rights. ”
He pointed to irregularities in the reported election figures from Edo North, where voter turnout appeared unusually high. ” All of a sudden, see all these funny results coming out of Edo North.
It doesn’ t make sense. How do you have the full numbers of accredited voters or people who took PVCs when you know averagely, it’ s 25 percent to 28 percent for a good election? All of a sudden, they are having 90 percent, 100 percent? ” Ighodalo questioned.

Anugbum Omuoha, the resident electoral commissioner (REC) for Edo State, reassured the public that the collation would be transparent and conducted fairly. He stated that INEC is committed to ensuring that the people’ s votes are counted properly, promising that all concerns would be addressed.
The delay in announcing the final results has left Edo residents on edge, with many questioning the integrity of the process. The outcome of the election is crucial, as it will determine the next governor of the state.
