An 81- year- old man named Mbokota from Ranganai Village, Mwenezi, faced serious rape charges in court on Tuesday before Magistrate Judith Zuyu. The alleged incident took place on August 4, 2024, and has left the community in shock.
According to the prosecution, Mbokota, who is the grandfather of the victim’ s father, was caught in the act by the child’ s mother, Edina Marandera, who is 19 years old. Marandera testified that she heard her two- year- old daughter crying from Mbokota’ s bedroom. When she rushed in, she encountered a distressing scene: Mbokota was found with his trousers down, holding the child.
The prosecutor, Tanyaradzwa Tinagwo, detailed that Mbokota was allegedly attempting to sexually assault the child at that moment. Marandera confronted him, demanding to know what he was doing, but he did not respond and merely handed her the child’ s trousers. In her shock, Marandera realized that her daughter’ s pants were missing.
In his defense, Mbokota denied the allegations, arguing that his age and health issues made such actions implausible. He questioned the court, stating, ” My private parts no longer function, so how can I rape? ” His claims suggested that physical limitations precluded him from committing the crime.
Marandera maintained that she had no motive to lie about the incident. She explained that she frequently assisted Mbokota with various tasks, such as washing his clothes and fetching water, and he would often compensate her with money as a gesture of gratitude. This relationship, she insisted, did not provide any reason for her to fabricate such serious accusations.
