Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has accused the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, of being directly involved in banditry activities in the state. Governor Lawal made these claims during an interview with Television Continental (TVC) on Wednesday, calling on Matawalle to resign from his position and face the allegations against him.
In the interview, Governor Lawal expressed concerns about Matawalle’ s involvement in the rising insecurity during his tenure as Zamfara State Governor. He revealed that there were credible reports and information suggesting that Matawalle maintained ties with some of the bandits terrorizing the state.
Lawal specifically mentioned that, during Matawalle’ s time as governor, some of these bandits were even housed at the Zamfara State Government House. The governor cited one instance where a high- ranking government official’ s children were abducted by bandits, and the ransom was reportedly paid through the government house.
” There were a lot of issues in the past with my predecessor, ” Lawal stated. He emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, noting that such acts were not isolated incidents, and that these issues severely damaged the security and reputation of the state.
Governor Lawal further argued that Matawalle’ s appointment as Minister of State for Defence by President Bola Tinubu was unfair to the people of Zamfara. He stressed that Matawalle should clear his name before continuing to serve in such a sensitive position.
” If I were him, I would resign and face all the allegations against me. That would have been more honorable, ” Lawal said. He also questioned the morality of Matawalle continuing to hold the ministerial office amid such serious accusations.
In his remarks, Governor Lawal urged Matawalle to take a step back from his official duties until the allegations against him were properly investigated and resolved.
He advised the former governor to resign, clear his name, and only then consider returning to public office. Lawal concluded by saying, ” If I’ m in that position, believe me, I’ ll put in my resignation letter. ”
The accusations have sparked discussions about the handling of insecurity in Zamfara State, and many are now watching to see how both the federal government and the minister respond to these claims.
