A devastating and tragic incident occurred in the Kalabo district, where a coalition of five ferocious male lions launched a deadly and unprovoked assault on a 20- year- old individual, resulting in his tragic and untimely demise. The heart- wrenching incident took place in the Mulinga area, Village Ilato, under the jurisdiction of Chief Nalubutu, where the victim was safeguarding a garden alongside his sibling in an effort to protect their crops from potential wildlife threats and ensure their family’ s food security.
As night fell, around 19: 00 hours, the brothers detected the ominous and eerie roars of lions nearby, prompting them to take divergent actions in a desperate bid for survival. While the surviving sibling sought refuge in the garden kraal, a secure enclosure designed to protect against wildlife attacks, the ill- fated victim attempted to flee to the village, approximately 300 meters distant, where he met his untimely end in a tragic and brutal manner. The victim’ s decision to flee was likely driven by a desire to seek help and safety, but unfortunately, it proved to be a fatal mistake.

Dominic Chiinda, Director of National Parks and Wildlife, issued a statement revealing that a team of wildlife police officers and Liuwa Plain National Park management promptly responded to the scene, conducting a thorough and meticulous search of the area and recovering remnants of the deceased. The swift response was aimed at ensuring the safety of the local community and preventing further loss of life and property. The team’ s efforts were commendable, and their prompt action helped to prevent further tragedy.
In a swift and decisive response to prevent further loss of life and property, the Ministry of Tourism, through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and Liuwa Plain National Park management, humanely euthanized the problematic lions, which were deemed a significant threat to human safety. The decision to euthanize the lions was not taken lightly, but it was necessary to protect human life and prevent future attacks.
Mr. Chiinda expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the ministry and confirmed that support has been extended to the bereaved family, who are undoubtedly going through a difficult time. He also cautioned the public to exercise extreme vigilance, avoid nocturnal movements, and travel in groups during dark hours to minimize the risk of such incidents, which can have devastating consequences. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of coexisting with wildlife and taking necessary precautions to prevent conflicts between humans and animals.
