PANIC In Community As Soldiers Invade Several Churches, FLOG Worshippers For This Shocking Reason
On Sunday morning, a wave of panic swept through Christian congregations in Umunze, located in the Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, as armed soldiers stormed various churches, forcing worshippers to disperse. The military presence in the community was accompanied by stern warnings that church services, movement, and market activities would be suspended indefinitely.
Disturbing Scenes At Local Churches
Witnesses recounted harrowing experiences during the morning Mass. Obika Ezeka, who was at St. Joseph’ s Catholic Church for the 6 AM service, described the terror that unfolded when gunshots rang out. As congregants awaited the priest, a soldier approached the altar, instructing everyone to leave immediately. The soldier explained that his colleagues had been killed by gunmen the previous Thursday, leading to the abrupt cessation of all activities in the area.
Similar disruptions occurred at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where soldiers ordered parishioners and clergy to vacate the premises. Another witness, Ejike, reported that soldiers interrupted a Bible study session at St. Peter’ s Anglican Church, demanding that the teacher stop speaking and clear the church.
Reports emerged of soldiers flogging male worshippers who resisted their invasion. Additionally, individuals found on the streets were arrested, and a building used by local tipper drivers was demolished. The once- bustling Nkwo Market quickly became deserted as traders hurriedly closed their shops, leaving many residents in distress. Nze Euphemia, a local mother, lamented the sudden market shutdown, which left families without food.
A local resident highlighted the ongoing insecurity in Umunze, citing a recent surge in kidnappings, with over 15 individuals reportedly abducted in recent weeks. The criminals, believed to operate from neighboring states, have caused widespread fear. The resident urged the government to establish military checkpoints on critical roads to deter kidnappers and enhance security.
A History Of Violence
The situation escalated following a violent confrontation between soldiers and gunmen the previous Thursday night. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as armed assailants sped through the Umunze- Ogbunka Road, prompting roadside vendors to close their shops in fear. Soldiers arrived shortly after, leading to a fierce gun battle that left two soldiers dead and the community in a state of terror.
In the aftermath, Simon Ekpa, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, took to social media to praise the actions of the Biafran Defence Force, suggesting that the attack on soldiers was orchestrated by secessionist groups. His comments have fueled speculation about the ongoing violence in the region, highlighting the urgent need for effective security measures to protect the vulnerable community of Umunze.
