The recent decision by Northern Nigerians to actively participate in the #EndBadGovernance protest has sparked widespread reactions across the country. In an interview with Vanguard, Sulaiman identified hunger, marginalization, and endemic poverty as the main reasons why the North is in turmoil.
He explained, ” The ongoing hunger protest in Nigeria has garnered widespread attention, with citizens from various regions of the country actively participating in demonstrations calling for an end to food insecurity and rising prices of essential goods. ”
He added that the Northern region has been particularly active in supporting the protest, with many of its youth taking to the streets to demand government action to address the food crisis in the nation, as well as the prevalent security situation in the region.
Sulaiman noted several key factors that explain why the Northern region has been deeply involved in the hunger protest. He highlighted that Northern Nigeria has long been known for its high levels of poverty and pervasive insecurity, with many communities in the region struggling to access nutritious food on a regular basis.
” The region is also home to a significant number of smallholder farmers who have been adversely affected by the activities of insurgents and bandits that have negatively impacted crop yields and livelihoods, ” Sulaiman explained.
He pointed out that this has led to food shortages and soaring food prices, creating a sense of frustration and desperation that has fueled the North’ s participation in the protest. Moreover, Sulaiman emphasized the historical marginalization and neglect of the Northern region by successive governments.
Many communities in the North lack access to basic infrastructure, healthcare, and educational opportunities, contributing to a deep- seated sense of disillusionment and anger among the youths of the region. ” The ongoing food crisis is viewed as yet another manifestation of the government’ s failure to prioritize the needs of its people, ” Sulaiman said.
The active involvement of Northerners in the #EndBadGovernance protest marks a significant shift in the region’ s political stance. It reflects the growing frustration with the current administration under President Bola Tinubu and a strong desire for change.
