Former President Donald Trump embarked on a trip to Montana with the goal of rallying support to unseat Democratic Senator Jon Tester. However, the journey took an unexpected turn when Trump’ s plane had to divert due to a mechanical issue.
Originally headed for Bozeman, Montana, the plane was redirected to Billings, a city 142 miles to the east, according to Jenny Mockel, an administrative assistant at Billings Logan International Airport. Trump continued his journey to Bozeman on a private jet without mentioning the diversion in a video he posted after landing.
Trump’ s visit to Montana is part of his effort to address unfinished business from 2018 when he campaigned vigorously but unsuccessfully to defeat Tester. Tester, who has held his Senate seat for three terms, has attempted to align himself with Trump’ s policies on many issues, a strategy that worked in 2018 but faces new challenges this election year.
Tester’ s main opponent, former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy, is working to connect the incumbent senator to Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, who has gained significant support among Democratic voters following President Joe Biden’ s withdrawal from the race.
Harris has been drawing large crowds and energizing Democratic supporters in swing states, touring this week with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, her choice for vice president.
In contrast, Trump’ s only rally this week is in Montana, a state he won by a wide margin in the last presidential election. Despite criticism that he is not focusing on swing states, Trump dismissed such concerns, stating that he is leading in those areas and wants to help Republicans win Senate and House seats.
Trump’ s rally at Montana State University, scheduled for 8 p. m. Mountain Time, is expected to attract thousands of Republican supporters. According to Rob Saldin, a political analyst at the University of Montana, Trump’ s presence could significantly influence the Senate race, as his name on the ballot might motivate a segment of the electorate to turn out in November.
Sheehy, a Trump supporter with a background in aerial firefighting, could benefit from this enthusiasm. The Republican Party has gained momentum in Montana over the past decade, currently holding all statewide offices except for Tester’ s Senate seat.
Tester, who has won his previous elections by narrow margins, has built his reputation as a straightforward farmer who connects with Montanans and is willing to oppose his party on key issues.
